INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Learn the Work. Do the Work. Grow Into the Professional You Want to Be.

At Fellowship Recovery, we believe the best clinical training happens when education meets meaningful, real-world experience.

Our internship program gives students the opportunity to learn inside an active behavioral health and substance use treatment environment while receiving the supervision, feedback, and support needed to develop into confident, ethical, and capable professionals.

We welcome students pursuing education in substance use counseling, mental health counseling, behavioral health, and related fields.

More Than an Internship - You are not here just to observe.

Fellowship interns become active members of the treatment team, with responsibilities and learning opportunities expanding based on their education, demonstrated competency, school requirements, and individualized supervision plan.

Internship experiences may include:

  • Group facilitation and co-facilitation

  • Individual counseling

  • Treatment planning

  • Clinical documentation

  • Client intake activities

  • Case consultation

  • Team meetings

  • Professional trainings

  • Individual and group supervision

  • Assessment experience for qualifying dual-discipline interns

Real Clients. Real Experience. Real Growth.

Our goal is to bridge the gap between what you learn in school and what it actually means to work in the field.

What You’ll Gain

Hands-On Clinical Experience

  • Build practical skills while working alongside experienced behavioral health professionals in a licensed treatment environment.

  • Dedicated Supervision

  • Every intern is assigned a primary supervisor and participates in ongoing supervision focused on cases, ethics, clinical development, documentation, feedback, and professional growth.

Clinical Confidence

  • Practice applying clinical knowledge in real situations while learning how to make thoughtful decisions, communicate effectively, and navigate the realities of behavioral healthcare.

  • Professional Development

  • Participate in team consultation, trainings, clinical discussions, and opportunities designed to strengthen your professional identity.

Exposure to Co-Occurring Care

  • Gain experience in an environment serving individuals with substance use and mental health needs.

You Won’t Be Expected to Figure It Out Alone

We believe interns should be challenged and supported simultaneously.

  • BBHT Approved Supervisors maintain oversight of clinical services, remain available for consultation, review documentation, provide feedback, and determine when an intern is ready to take on additional responsibilities.

  • Clinical independence develops gradually and intentionally—not because someone simply reached a certain number of internship hours.

  • For individual counseling, interns may progress from observing sessions, to co-facilitating, to leading approved sessions under appropriate supervision.

What We Look for in an Intern

  1. You do not need to arrive knowing everything.

  2. You do need to arrive ready to learn.

We value interns who are:

  • Curious. Ask questions and seek opportunities to understand the work more deeply.

  • Coach-able. Receive feedback, reflect on it, and use it to grow.

  • Dependable. Follow through on commitments and communicate when something changes.

  • Professional. Maintain appropriate boundaries, confidentiality, ethics, and respectful communication.

  • Flexible. Behavioral healthcare rarely goes exactly according to plan. Being able to adapt matters.

  • Engaged. Participate in the experience rather than waiting for someone else to create it for you.

Supervision That Is Actually About Development

Supervision at Fellowship is more than getting a signature.

Interns are encouraged to bring:

  • Client questions

  • Clinical challenges

  • Ethical concerns

  • Documentation questions

  • Areas where they feel stuck

  • Professional goals

  • Successes worth celebrating

  • Skills they want more opportunities to practice

Supervision includes discussion of cases, ethics, professional development, feedback, clinical work, and areas for continued growth.

Opportunities for Dual-Interns

  • Students pursuing training across both substance use disorder treatment and mental health disciplines may have opportunities to participate in diagnostic assessment activities when appropriate for their training level and school requirements.

  • Under qualified supervision, these experiences may include observing assessments, participating in interviews, administering approved screening or assessment tools, developing draft narratives and clinical impressions, and participating in case formulation. Final diagnostic determinations remain the responsibility of the qualified supervising clinician.

Paid Internship Opportunities

  • We recognize that interns contribute meaningful time, effort, and energy while completing demanding academic programs.

  • Fellowship Recovery offers compensated internship positions. Internship hours and schedules are coordinated based on school requirements, agency needs, and supervision availability.

Internship Locations

  • Citadel - Minneapolis, Minnesota

  • Perspectives - St. Louis Park, Minnesota

Internship placement and scheduling are based on program needs, educational requirements, supervision availability, and the type of experience being completed.
